As a waterfall chaser I get ‘tips’ from various sources as to where I can find new waterfalls, however getting said tip from a drunk guy in a pub was a new one on me!
Let’s start at the beginning, the early morning was pretty much a wash out photography wise after going to Oban, a place I have never yet found anything interesting in and it was then we decided to drive towards Fort William for some lunch. After the usual back and forth banter of “where are you from?” and “what are you here for?” ( A question I invariably answer with the understated answer of “I take photographs”)I then got an answer that had my head whipping round so fast i think I got whiplash “So you’ll have seen the waterfall then?”
After the realisation that the waterfall was in fact not going anywhere we had a leisurely lunch before proceeding along a fairly nondescript road between houses, still not sure if we were even in the right area. The seemingly boring road meanders along not giving much until you round a corner and come face to face with the Nevis Range, my reaction to this sight can certainly not be printed for fear of upsetting the more genteel of reader so the best word I can think of is incredulity, the view of the range is really rather special and being the largest in the country certainly makes for a wonderful photograph.
The road continues for a few miles with still nothing indicating a waterfall that is until you reach a little bridge which takes the road down from a standard street style 2-way to a single lane road, it was at this stage decided to stop and have a look…..WATERFALL!!! As always with me and waterfalls the first thing I look for is a way down to water level, well in this case…. there isn’t one, or should I say not a safe one that gives you a good view of the falls but the bridge with the correct lens gives enough to get what I hope was a good photograph. From here the road carries on for a few miles of spectacular terrain before stopping at a car park, from here it is on foot up the mountain on a path warning of death for the less than sure of foot and they mean it!
I will definitely be revisiting the waterfall as with it being fairly central in Fort William I’m in the area a lot, I can imagine it becoming one of my favourite places.
