Few places in the world are quite as breath-taking and naturally lush as the Scottish highlands. The scenery, attractions, and friendly, welcoming citizens make Scotland a wonderful destination for the entire family. Fortunately, a car trip through the Scottish highlands is both spectacular and practical. With cars available for hire, any family can coast through the stunning highlands and sight-see, dine, or relax as they please. Some recommended stops on a Scottish highlands car trip are Fort William, Isles of Skye and Mull, and Inverness.
Fort William Scotland
This is the perfect destination for those passionate about mountain biking or encountering unbelievable mountain top views. Ben Nevis, the highest point in the UK, is located at Fort William, and after a drive to the mountain tourist path there is a glorious walk to the top for unbeatable Scottish scenery, especially of Inverness-shire. For adventure-seekers, the Nevis Range Mountain Experience offers enumerable mountain bike trails of varying skill levels. Summer Loch Linnhe boat tours, a fun way to learn about local animals such as the seal and other wildlife, are also available. Another great activity for children is a trip to the train station to see the Hogwarts Express from the “Harry Potter” film series. Choosing to stay at a local Bed and Breakfast with traditional Scottish breakfast, a significant aspect of Scottish hospitality, is another perfect way to pamper the whole family.
The Isles of Skye and Mull
These Isles are must-see locations in Scotland. They are easily accessible by ferry to Mull and a Bridge to Skye and offer beautiful scenery. Skye is different from most of the highlands in that it is plentiful not in trees but in cliffs and waterfalls. All the family will enjoy the views of the stunning Cuillin mountain range and visiting Dunvegan Castle, while parents will enjoy whisky tasting and tours at Talisker Distillery. Mull is also a spectacular island, accessible by a ferry ride from Oban. Tobermory, a tiny village on the island, is an excellent attraction for the whole family. It is home to the some of the most delectable fish and chips in existence as well as Tobermory Chocolate, a famous confectionery.
Driving to Inverness along the 23 miles of Loch Ness is an unbelievable experience. Children will love to search for the Loch Ness Monster “Nessie” along the way. Boat tours are also available that teach the exciting history of the mysterious legend. The ruins of Urquhart Castle from the 6th century are a moving sight as well. Music is alive throughout Inverness, with pipers, guitarists, and accordion players delivering the delightful sounds of Scotland. For lovers of mountain biking, the Abriachan, or Kelpies, trail is a wonderful choice.
Scotland is truly a perfect wonderland for all ages, and a relaxing car trip throughout the beautiful and welcoming Scottish highlands is an unbeatable vacation for the whole family.
