The Waterfall Diaries Part 10 – The Black Spout

How do you hide a waterfall? Well it appears that Pitlochry has this trick down to a tee because I have been going to Pitlochry for many years to spend time at Loch Faskally and I had no idea there was a waterfall in the town.

The realisation that there was indeed a waterfall came when I was on my way home from a highland trip and decided to detour through the lovely little town of Pitlochry , even then and saying that it was total realisation, I drove past it, looked at the sign, drove on for about 10 miles then thought …WAIT A MINUTE… BLACK SPOUT ..THAT HAS TO BE A WATERFALL!!

So, on a cold Monday morning I ventured back to Pitlochry and after passing the entrance 3 times I finally found the car park for the Black Spout and at first glance it looked promising, the sign said “Black Spout 500yds” and I was thinking an easy walk to a small fall was going to be the way of it, I was wrong ,with the previously mentioned 500 yards being STRAIGHT UP !!!  I was a little tired when I reached the top (for little tired read leaning over the barrier trying not to lose a lung), what I found there came as a surprise, so ….

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LET ME INTRODUCE TO YOU, COMING OUT OF THE TREES AND WEIGHING IN AT A VERY IMPRESSIVE 180 FEET …. THE BLACK SPOUT!!!

It was at this point I tried to get closer for the sake of the photograph, it was a mistake… without the aid of climbing equipment it just isn’t possible without risking death, so stick to the platform.

I have to say I was happy, I’d seen the Black Spout and was heading back to the car but I could still hear running water and after a little investigation I found the most glorious little waterfall in amongst a moss filled area, remembering in future however to be more stealthy when walking up to the falls as with a lighter footfall I could have had a FABULOUS picture 2 young deer drinking from the river! As it was of course all I saw was the cotton tails darting for the dense forest.

Apart from these falls the area in general is really nice with Scotlands smallest distillery, The Edradour literally next to the car park, Loch Faskally 5 minutes away and many places to eat,drink and shop.
