Glencoe has much to offer the recreational and family cyclist. With everything from gnarly off road trails for the skilled mountain biker to family friendly cycle trails.
Crank it up Gear, are linked via the old Oban to Ballachulish railway line which is now a paved cycle track to Sustrans route 78, following Lochs Leven and Linnhe down to Oban. The scenery on this excellent track is stunning, the surface is smooth and it’s not too hilly for those with shorter legs.
There is an excellent refreshment stop at the Holly Tree Hotel at 6.5 miles where you can bask on the old pier. This makes a good turnaround spot for families on day hire, although it’s worth pushing on if feeling good to Cuil Bay Duror if you want a beach.
There are also many options for the hardy up the many Glens on forest roads, or if the cycle track isn’t enough, or you just want a cycle around the village then there are many trails up in the woods around Glencoe House and the old estate. This was created to look like British Columbia by Lord Strathcona Mount Royal over 100 years ago to stop his part Canadian Indian wife from being homesick.
We supply maps of the trails for the off road cyclist and OS sheet 41. We have a good knowledge of the local area and know the flora, fauna and local history from the recent history back to the Massacre and beyond to the time of the early Celts, and some of the historic sites that van be visited by cycle. There are numerous “geocache” sites locally accessible by cycle which is a great way to entertain the family as a treasure hunt.
Bike hire is from only £2o per day, and all our bikes are pre-checked before hire, helmets and repair kits are also supplied. You will find us in Glencoe village just off the main street and close to the mountain rescue centre.
