Some people say that Nessie is the biggest myth in Scotland - in fact it is Skin so soft being a good way to keep midges at bay. I have tried SSS and it didnt work. Another time at Loch Oich me and a couple of friends time put SSS on one arm and a DEET based repellent on the other arm. Lets just say the SSS covered arms were bitten and the DEET one not a bite.

DEET is not great for the skin so I now use smidge which I got up in Gairloch last year recommended by the shop owner who also sells SSS as tourists are duped into the myth and wont buy anything else as they think they have been let into a great secret. And do you not think if SSS was any use the vast marketing department of multi-billion dollar Avon would be marketing it????

A pity that you represent the Battle of Culloden as a Scot vs English conflict. It was, of course, nothing of the sort, as many of the Government troops were Scots, and there were many English Jacobites. Also wrong to say that the appointment of the Duke of Cumberland was a major factor in the the decision to turn back at Derby.

Davy,

Thanks for that, appreciate your comment. I was very lucky to have come from Dunkeld, but the battle itself was often overlooked, lost amid Dunkeld's other important historical stuff.

Hope all is good with you

Cheers

Just read the article......My wife is one of Neil's Skype students, form California. Neil is a fantastic instructor. His rates are cheeper than it cost to drive for a lesson, unless you live next to a piper. We actually got started with a 2 week stay with Neil and Susan. It is a full service tour. Our days included a morning tuition, then off to tour the Scottish Countryside, with pipes to play at the sites. Lunch either out or back to the house. More touring and piping, then back to the house for dinner and yes more piping. Susan is a fabulous cook, with meals to brag about. This was truly a chance to see Scotland in a way only Neil and Susan can do. We went to a Shotts and Dykehead Band practice session. We hiked to the top of a mountain to look down on the Bannock Burn, with Neil explaining the battle; it really makes history come alive. We went to the games and piping competitions. Need a set of bagpipes, Neil can coordinate that too. Neil and Susan gave us a vacation of a lifetime. We left their home and hospitality the day before he posted this article and are now planning this summers tour with them again.

Explaining the Covenanters and the Parlimentary wars is never easy. Yet this period informs much of modern Scotland and indeed the UK. A nice synopsis David. I agree with you a visit to Dunkeld is very enjoyable and rewarding.

Witchy
My family, the Stewarts, originated in Glasgow. I live in America and want to know more about Renfrewshire and the Cradle of the Stewarts. Can you give me a name or a source of material that will let me catch up on what my family was up to back in Renfrewshire in the Middle Ages?
